Dissertation “Beyond the Atlantic; Identity Borders and the Finnish American Diaspora, 1850–2000”.

In her dissertation, Marianne Wargelin explores the development of the Finnish-American identity, its preservation and changes therein in the long term.

The author aims to explore the expression of this identity by means of the range of cultural products that emerged among the Finnish American population in the 20th century.

Wargelin’s dissertation will be the first English-language work looking at the factors and phenomena that fostered the identity of Finnish settlers over the years.

Wargelin wrote her dissertation at the University of Tampere.
