A small nation has only its culture. I often like to quote the foundation’s founder, Aatos Erkko, whose words, I believe, capture the core rationale and motivation behind our work. Every year—when compiling the annual report—we critically reflect on the past. Have we approached our mission with sufficient ambition? What kind of societal investments have we made in knowledge and well-being, in our cultural capital?
At the foundation, we continuously work to ensure better expertise at all stages of project processing. A big thanks goes to our customer service team, which interacts daily with numerous applicants on a wide range of topics. The expertise of our professionals is evident not only in the preparation of grant proposals but also in their role in deepening our understanding of the field—an area that has increasingly become a core part of the foundation’s daily work.
In recent years, we have set a goal to support the renewal of science and the arts. Recognizing the potential of creators and the organizational—even structural—needs for development, and creating space for the new generation, requires action, not just words. Foundation work is not done in a vacuum, and the need for dialogue among different stakeholders has increased. This is also reflected in the development of shared knowledge bases and data collection methods in foundation collaboration.
The newly published 2024 annual report offers a look back at the past year. However, achieving results aligned with our foundation’s goals requires patience—as in basic research, the most valuable fruits of our labor may only be harvested decades from now.
