Applications submitted to the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation are assessed through peer review. The evaluation is carried out by expert panels appointed for the duration of each strategy period. The experts are experienced and highly qualified researchers or professionals in the fields of art and culture. Their primary task is to assess the scientific content and quality of the projects, as well as their artistic and cultural quality and significance. In addition, consideration is given to how well the project aligns with the Foundation’s objectives. The Foundation does not publish the names of the experts to ensure the independence of decision-making.
If an expert has a conflict of interest, they will recuse themselves from the evaluation. A conflict of interest may arise, for example, from scientific, professional, or financial ties to the applicant. If several experts are conflicted or the project requires specific disciplinary expertise, additional reviewers may be invited from a pool of standby experts. This ensures that no single reviewer’s opinion carries undue weight in the assessment of any individual project and that the evaluation remains fair and well-informed. Final funding decisions are always made by the Foundation’s Board.
