Science received €327 million, and by far the largest share within the sciences went to medicine and health sciences, which received over €100 million. Domestic foundations have thus become the largest funder of medical research in Finland.

The share of private foundations in funding for art and culture has grown significantly over the past decade. Art and culture received a record €99 million from foundations—€14 million more than the year before. Of the arts, music received the most support (€25 million), followed by the performing arts (€24 million).

The Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation awarded €47.2 million in grants last year, making it the third-largest foundation in Finland by grant volume.

Foundations seek to uphold education, hope and inclusion. Since Finland’s independence, Finnish foundations have funded science and research with more than €6 billion. In Europe, there are 175,000 foundations that support public-benefit purposes with a total of €76 billion annually. European Day of Foundations and Donors was celebrated on October 1.
